How to Become a Teacher in New York

Step-by-Step: Getting Certified in New York

  1. 1

    Complete Your Education

    Bachelor's degree; master's degree required for Professional Certificate. This typically includes completing an approved teacher preparation program that includes coursework in pedagogy, child development, and your subject area.

    Complete Student Teaching

    Complete a supervised student teaching experience (clinical practice) in an approved school setting. Most programs require a full semester of student teaching under a cooperating teacher.

    Pass Required Assessments

    New York requires passing state-approved assessments before certification is issued:

Alternative Paths to Certification in New York

If you have a bachelor's degree in another field or relevant professional experience, these routes may let you enter the classroom sooner while completing certification requirements.

  • NYC Teaching Fellows: Intensive summer training then classroom teaching while earning a master's
  • Teach For America (active in New York City)
  • Transitional B Certificate: Allows teaching while completing requirements
  • Career and Technical Education certification

Out-of-State Certification & Reciprocity

New York participates in NASDTEC but requires New York-specific exams (NYSTCE) in most cases. A master's degree is required for the Professional Certificate, making NY one of the more demanding reciprocity states.
